Terminals 2 A & B

An Open-Ended System

Roissy's Terminal 2 was designed from the start as a system with a built-in capacity for development in successive phases, in such a way that it could be adapted to changing traffic conditions while maintaining its overall unity. Terminal 2's development was guided by two simple principles. The first was that the planning and the construction work would be accomplished in several stages; the second was that at each stage there would be a clear boundary between the part in use and the part being built. These two principles create the necessary conditions for successful construction phasing and open-ended planning.

A strong organizational scheme fixes the key relationships between the road network, the car parks and the traffic modules, as well as the main lines of the technical support network.

But the scheme leaves enormous leeway for defining individual components, which can therefore be adapted, at each given stage, to shifting economic or technical conditions.

The project's identity is grounded in the organizational scheme, its vitality in the leeway left for adaptation. Both are necessary and together they define Terminal 2 as an open-ended system.
